# DSIP Peptide Explained: What Sleep Research Shows (Philippines Guide)

DSIP was named for deep sleep in 1977, but the human evidence is small, dated and mixed. Research notes

It is literally called the delta sleep-inducing peptide. So why, almost 50 years later, is it still not a sleep medicine? DSIP is a short chain of nine amino acids. In 1977, Swiss researchers described it after isolating it from the blood of rabbits kept in induced sleep.

The idea was simple. A natural sleep factor, carried in the blood, that could push the brain toward deep, slow-wave sleep. Early human work looked promising. A small 1981 double-blind study in six adults with chronic insomnia reported longer, less interrupted sleep.

But the picture got muddier. A 1992 randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 16 people with chronic insomnia found only weak effects, and patients did not feel they slept better. The authors concluded it was unlikely to be of major benefit. The biggest mystery is basic biology.

A 2006 review in the Journal of Neurochemistry noted that no gene, precursor protein or receptor for DSIP had been identified. How it acts in the body is still unclear. Most human studies are small and decades old. Modern, large safety trials do not exist.
