# GLP-1 Side Effects: What the Trials Found (Philippines Guide)

Filipinos researching GLP-1 medicines usually ask one thing first: what side effects showed up in the trials? Semaglutide and tirzepatide copy gut hormones that control appetite and digestion. Two mechanisms explain most side effects. They slow how fast the stomach empties.

And they act on the area postrema, a brainstem trigger zone for nausea. In the STEP 1 trial, published in 2021 in adults with obesity or overweight, about 44% on semaglutide reported nausea, versus 17% on placebo. Diarrhea, vomiting and constipation were also more common. In SURMOUNT-1, published in 2022, nausea on tirzepatide ranged from about 25 to 33%, versus 10% on placebo.

Labels say these effects were most common while doses were being increased, then eased. One reason: the stomach-slowing effect fades with steady exposure, and brainstem circuits adapt. Labels also list rarer, serious risks: acute pancreatitis, and gallbladder problems such as gallstones, reported more often than on placebo. They also note kidney injury reports, mostly in people dehydrated by vomiting or diarrhea.

Worth knowing in hot, humid Philippine weather. Status: both are approved prescription medicines in the US, and tirzepatide reached Philippine drugstores as a prescription medicine in late 2025.
