Peptides are all over your feed right now. But what actually is a peptide? A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, the building blocks of protein. Most definitions put peptides at 2 to 50 amino acids.

Longer chains are proteins. Peptides are not steroids either. Steroids are built around four carbon rings, like cholesterol and testosterone. Your body makes peptides every day.

Insulin is one: 51 amino acids, made in the pancreas. It was first isolated in 1921. Many peptide hormones work like a key. They fit a receptor on a cell and switch on a signal.

A July 2026 CBS News report linked the recent surge in demand to wellness influencers, the popularity of GLP-1 medicines, and interest in anti-aging and muscle building. Researchers now study peptides in six broad areas: metabolic, recovery, skin, sleep, cognition, and longevity. But the evidence is very uneven. GLP-1 medicines were tested in large human trials.

A 2025 systematic review of BPC-157 found 35 animal studies and only one small human study. Semax is a prescription drug in Russia, but it is not approved in the US. So how do you judge a source? Look for independent, third-party lab reports.
