Two separate clocks run on a reconstituted vial. The first is microbial: every needle pass through the stopper risks introducing organisms, and an aqueous solution feeds them. Bacteriostatic water answers this clock with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a preservative that suppresses bacterial growth over a multi-week window. Which compounds degrade fastest

Not all sequences age at the same rate, and the differences are structural. Signs a vial is done

Visual inspection catches the worst failures. A solution that was clear and has turned hazy or cloudy is finished: haze means aggregation or microbial growth, and either one ends the vial. Visible particles, flakes or strands are the same verdict. Color change from the original appearance is another stop sign. So is a vial that never dissolved cleanly in the first place despite patient swirling. What inspection cannot do is confirm potency: a vial can look perfect at day 40 and still have lost meaningful activity, which is why the dated label, not the appearance, should decide retirement. Write the reconstitution date and concentration on every vial the day you mix it, keep vials refrigerated and away from light, never freeze a reconstituted vial, and when the window closes, start fresh. How can I tell a vial has degraded?
