SS-31 in the Philippines
SS-31, also known by its international name elamipretide, is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide that concentrates in mitochondria and binds cardiolipin, a phospholipid of the inner mitochondrial membrane. Laboratory work on SS-31 centres on how that binding affects mitochondrial structure and the peroxidase activity of cytochrome c.
In people, elamipretide has been studied in primary mitochondrial myopathy and in Barth syndrome. MMPOWER-3, a phase 3 trial in 218 adults with primary mitochondrial myopathy, did not meet its primary endpoints of walking distance and fatigue at 24 weeks, and the TAZPOWER crossover in Barth syndrome did not show a significant difference from placebo on its primary endpoints.
